A large squad from St Christopher’s School went to the Devon schools individual championships in Plymouth to give lots of pupils the opportunity to play in a tournament.

We are incredibly proud to report that we came away with five medals which included bronze medals for Florence, William C, Boe and Scarlett in Prep 4 against older pupils, who all made the semi finals.

Poppy beat Florence in the semi finals to qualify for the final where she came up against the current England number one ranked player. She gave a good account of herself and came away with a silver medal.

National schools Team Table Tennis Championships

At the national schools team championships, both our boys and girls qualified for the semi finals in Bristol.  St Christopher’s was one of 16 schools, both independent and state, in the country to compete.

The boys team of William C, Boe, Casper, Benji and Tomas had a tough time facing strong competition from schools in London and Hertfordshire before finishing their campaign with a tight match with a school from Worcestershire. This involved many of the games going to five sets with us just losing out 5-3.

The girls team of Poppy, Florence, Harriet and Scarlett started off with a win against a school from Buckinghamshire 5-3 before a close encounter against a school from Southend which could have gone either way but we went down 3-5.

They finished off with a loss to the eventual winners London Academy, a very large establishment that focuses on table tennis, who were successful in a number of the age groups.

A superb table tennis-playing experience for St Christopher’s pupils

It was a great experience for our pupils to go to a very large tournament like this and play some of the best players in the country.

We came up against a lot of schools who have more pupils in one year group than we have in our whole school!

Well done to everyone who took part – they were all fabulous.
