As parents, we’re always searching for fun, exciting, and cost-effective activities to keep our children entertained. If you’re in Devon, you’re in luck! This stunning region is a treasure trove of free activities and attractions perfect for families. Whether you’re exploring the breathtaking coastline or uncovering hidden gems in the countryside, Devon offers something for everyone.

Explore the South West Coast Path

One of our top recommendations is a walk along the South West Coast Path. The views are nothing short of spectacular, with endless sea vistas and abundant wildlife. For a memorable outing, start your adventure from the National Trust Car Park, Redlap, Little Dartmouth – TQ6 0JP. This small yet charming circuit is full of character, offering glorious cliffside views, the sea’s invigorating tang, and a peek into the region’s rich history, including a view of the historic Dartmouth Castle and the beautiful River Dart.

Adventure Through Dartmoor National Park

Dartmoor National Park is another must-visit for families. The park is home to numerous walking trails, but one of our favourites is Hembury Woods near Buckfastleigh. This area offers a serene walk along the River Dart, where you can spot various wildlife. For a bit more adventure, hike up to Hembury Castle Hill Fort, an Iron Age site with panoramic views. The woodland paths are easy to navigate and offer multiple routes, making it an ideal spot for both short strolls and more vigorous hikes. Keep an ear out for the elusive wood warbler’s song as you venture deeper into the forest.

Cycle the Wray Valley Trail

For families who enjoy cycling, the Wray Valley Trail is a fantastic way to explore Devon. Starting from Station Road Car Park in Bovey Tracey (TQ13 9SB), the trail takes you on an 11km journey through picturesque landscapes, following the route of the historic Newton Abbot to Moretonhampstead railway. This mainly traffic-free path is perfect for a day out, as it weaves through the National Trust Parke Estate and past the charming village of Lustleigh. Along the way, you’ll cross two newly built bridges over the A382, a testament to the trail’s rich history and ongoing efforts to preserve it.
